It was seen as the must have stocking filler for the rugby lover's wife or girlfriend with copies flying off the shelves in record time. The product of course was Iestyn Thomas' Benefit Year Calendar.
Scarlets
Llanelli defeated Tonga 24 15 captained by Gareth Jenkins. On 09/12/1974, the new centenary gates presented by the four local authorities in the area were officially opened.
The Australian tourists arrived in November with the Scarlets unbeaten at home. A remarkeable match ended in a 28-28 draw after Llanelli had led by 28-15 with 12 minutes left.
The new floodlights were switched on against Abertillery; however the official ceremony performed by President Handel Rogers did not take place until Moseley visited on 07/12/77.
Andy Hill retired - A remarkable clubman, who still holds club records to this day; most career tries 312 and most career points 2577 in 454 games for the club.
Phil Bennett played his last game for the club against Northampton. Appropriately he rounded off his career despite being injured with a try. Phil played in 412 games, scored 132 tries and 2,532 points. Boxing day saw the club in mourning as their popular physio Bert Peel was taken ill during the London Welsh game and passed away in hospital later that evening.
In November the New Zealand Maoris were defeated 16-9.
In January, came the shock news of the death of Carwyn James aged 53.
On 20/11/84, Llanelli achieved another historic victory, defeating Australia 19-16. It was a win achieved without club captain Phil May.
A third round cup tie against Pontypool promised to attract the season's biggest crowd. The week leading up to this tie saw the first Carwyn James memorial match played on 21/1/86 against Queensland. Due to the cup tie, a shadow XV represented Llanelli, who gave a magnificent showing only to lose 12-13.
October saw Jonathan Davies make his delayed debut v Petone (NZ), Llanelli winning 26-14 with Jonathan contributing a drop-goal.
Of all the disappointments during 1989-90, none was more bitter than the defeat by New Zealand at the end of October - not because of the defeat of 0-11 but because of the tempestuous weather conditions.
September saw the first season of league rugby get under way.
In October, Australia defeated Argentina 32-19 in a pool match of the RWC.
It was a season of astonishing achievement for and an appropriate finale for coach Gareth Jenkins, who was leaving to join the Wales set-up. The Cup and League double, the win over Australia in November 1992 and being named British team of the season, that was a Scarlets vintage season!
Despite this, Stradey was in mourning again as President Ken Jones collapsed and died at the AGM in July. Ken was "Mr Llanelli", captained the club, became the club's longest serving secretary and subsequent President.
A British Isles XV played an international Select XV in a tribute match for Ieuan Evans, with Jonah Lomu in the Select XV line-up.
In October, Llanelli played their first ever European Cup Tie - a match against Leinster whom they beat 34 - 17, with Frano Botica, kicking 19 points. In December, Llanelli RFC was one of the first clubs to launch an official site on the internet.
The All Blacks arrived on 8th November and narrowly won by 81 points to 3 - enough said!!
Wales played Italy in a full international at Stradey on 7th February winning 23-20, with Ieuan Evans playing his 72nd and final international.
In January, Llanelli beat Pontypridd in the final of the WRU Challenge Trophy. The century ended on a high with a marvelous match v Swansea on 27th December when Llanelli won 30-24.
On 15th January, Wasps were the visitors in a vitally important European Cup tie. Llanelli needed to win by at least 10 points to progress. They duly obliged winning 25-15.
On 17th May, Llanelli played their last competitive fixture as we knew it because from August, Regional Rugby would replace the club rugby that we had enjoyed for 130 years. On 7th July, Llanelli Scarlets were launched with Gareth Jenkins as Director of Rugby. On 29th August, Llanelli Scarlets regional team played their first game at Stradey against Newcastle Falcons; on the 6th September, the Scarlets played their first home League match (against the Dragons). On 5th October, the regional side played their first European Cup tie, defeating Northampton 14-9.
On 14th May, the Scarlets played Ulster. The Scarlets won the match 23-16 and the League Championship. On 2nd July, an open-topped bus left the Stradey car park to take the players to the Town Hall for a civic reception to celebrate winning the league title.
On 7th May, the Scarlets beat the Ospreys 23-15 to reach the final of the Celtic Cup.
19th May saw the final game of Gareth Jenkins' stewardship after 37 years at the club, as he took charge of the Welsh national side. However, the Scarlets failed to give him a winning send-off, drawing with title-chasing Ulster. Gareth coached the club/region for 937 matches, winning 640 and masterminded them to 13 trophies (8 WRU Cup, 3 WRU league, 1 Celtic League and 1 WRU Challenge Trophy).
On 30th March, Munster were defeated 34-15 in the quarter final of the European Cup. On 31st October, Stradey was in mourning when news broke of the untimely death of our President Grav. His funeral took place at Stradey in November.
Scarlets bid a fond farewell to a cherished friend. A service of thanksgiving was conducted by Scarlets' chaplain the Rev Eldon Phillips the week before the last game among. Some soil was taken from Stradey in memory of all those who ashes had been scattered there over the years which included Syd Davies, whose son Anthony made an 18,000 mile round trip from Western Australia to be there. - Thanks for the memories Stradey Park. Dabo hen ffrind - diolch am yr atgofion.
