On top of all this she’s won a very personal battle as well. While playing for Wales against France her leg was shattered in a strong tackle. She was told that she would not be able to run again yet alone compete on any level.
But, for over a year, she batled through various operations and treatments and regained her place back on the rugby field and in theWelsh team.
The crowning glory or her recovery as kicking the winning points last year in the Six Nations game against England – the first time in 22 yearsWales had beaten the old enemy.
That year, theWelsh women won the Triple Crown as well. Her first experience of rugby was at Stradey Park. Her father had taken her there, to stand with the Tanner Bank faithful. Her first hero was Ieuan Evans and she says that the earliest sporting moment that stays in her mind is the Scarlets victory against Australia. The infamous Ieuan Evans and Rupert Moon celebration is a close second all time sporting memory!
Another Scarlets connectionwas formed some years later as Non was organising Rupert Moons’ testimonial game.
She had to contact some former Scarlet stars in order to put a team together to play the team at the time. Phoning former star forward Mark Perego turned from asking him to play a game of rugby into something far more personal and the two are still an ‘item’ today!
The Women’s Rugby World Cup is held this summer and Wales face a difficult task. They are in the same group as New Zealand, Australia and South Africa! As well as succeeding with Wales in the World Cup, Non has a personal ambition as well. So far she has scored 62 tries for Wales. “ David Campese has scored 65 international tries so I’m hoping to score 4 more tries and pass the maestro himself!” she says proudly.
Everybody at Parc y Scarlets wishes Non and the rest of the Welsh Women’s team the very best today against England. And a big thank you to Non for being so willing to showher True Colour on such an important day!
