With a bonus point fourth try scored on the half time whistle it looked as though the Scarlets had secured the victory with plenty of time to spare but indiscipline and the run of play not going in the Scarlets favour made for a difficult second half.
Edinburgh fought their way back in to the fight, keen to ensure a second home victory, to add to that against Zebre earlier in the season.
It was a game apiece last season as each team won its respective home game, whilst Scarlets' only win at Murrayfield in nine visits so far came on 8 January 2011.
It was Edinburgh who opened the scoring with a try after eight minutes but the Scarlets soon hit back through the hands of wing sensation George North. Outside half Aled Thomas converts the try to bring the score to 7 all.
Edinburgh go ahead once again after a penalty but it isn't long before the Scarlets hit back with a second try. Scrum half Gareth Davies sets off on a strong run before passing to centre Nick Reynolds who crosses the whitewash to bring the Scarlets to a 10-12 lead.
The home side keep the scoreboard ticking over with another three point penalty and follow up with another just four minutes later, at 28 minutes.
Just minutes later Thomas kicks the Scarlets back into Edinburgh's half and wasting no time, North crosses the line for a second time.
With 35 minutes on the clock its 19 points all after Scarlets are penalised once again. Scarlets work their way back into Edinburgh half, a great move by scrum half Davies on the half time mark sees him cross the line for fourth and bonus point try. The referee goes to the TMO - he awards the try. Thomas adds the conversion to take the Scarlets 19-26 ahead as they head into the changing rooms.
Half time: Edinburgh 19 Scarlets 26
It was the home side who came back fighting in the second half kicking three penalties as the Scarlets' penalty count increased.
Edinburgh went ahead 28-26 leaving the Scarlets in a vulnerable position with minutes remaining on the clock.
A 78th penalty by replacement outside half Rhys Priestland secured the win for the Scarlets to keep the top four play-off position.
The West Wales region will welcome Zebre to Parc y Scarlets on Saturday 3rd November, kick-off 6.30pm.
