First brick is a family affair
MEET Mel Roberts and grandchildren Lloyd Pike and Nathan and Alika Rees - they’ll be the first Llanelli Scarlets fans to have their names etched into the region’s bright future.
A brick bearing the message “Mel Roberts, love from Nathan, Lloyd & Alika” will be the first produced in an innovative scheme linking supporters to the region’s new stadium forever.
It was ordered by Llanelli sisters Sharon Pike and Vanessa Rees, the childrens’ mothers and Mel’s daughters. Their purchase was the first for The Scarlets Way, a walkway to be laid at the £23m Pemberton sports complex – it will be full of commemorative named bricks bought by and for rugby fans.
Retired industrial supervisor Mel said: “It’s a wonderful gift from Vanessa, Sharon and the children. Like me they’re all huge Scarlets fans so this means a lot.
“It’ll be a privilege to have our names at the new stadium. I’m really looking forward to the big move.”
Mel, aged 70, has lived in Llanelli’s Seaside area all his life and is a Scarlets patron who sits in the South Stand.
He first visited Stradey Park in the 1950s and he said: “It was very different then – no North Stand for a start.”
His favourite current player is former All Black Regan King who has just extended his Scarlets contract. His favourite of past years is former Lions skipper and fly-half legend Phil Bennett. Mel said: “He had it all – great ability and wonderful skills.”
Mel’s grandchildren live in Sandy Water Park, a stone’s throw from Stradey Park.
Nathan, aged 11, is a pupil at Coedcae School. He’s a Stradey Park season ticket holder who quotes Stephen Jones as his top man. Outside-half Jones has just pledged his future to the Scarlets.
He said: “I’m glad we got this as a gift for Grampa – he’s got everything else he needs!”
Lloyd, a nine-year-old pupil of Pentip Primary School, said his favourite player was Simon Easterby, another star to have recently re-signed for the region. He said: “The new ground should be great, with all its modern facilities. I can’t wait.”
Pentip pupil Alika, aged six, said: “I love the Scarlets – they’re the best team. I enjoy going to their games a lot and I think the new ground will be brilliant.”
Llanelli Scarlets head of marketing, Richard Jones, said: “We’re delighted that Sharon, Vanessa and their children chose to give this as a gift to Mel – it’s a great way of ensuring they secure their place in our history
“These bricks are a must for every loyal supporter and we’ve had a lot of interest already.”
